Hey everyone,
Fairly new to lurking this forum, but from what I've seen there's a wealth of knowledge here.
Picking up an OBS C1500 this weekend. It was my Uncle's truck, he drove it off of the lot brand new. Has too many cars now and neither of his sons wanted it so I told him I'd be more than happy to have it. Driving it up to NY from GA this weekend.
Has the 305 with about 240k on it.
I'm hoping to learn as much as I can, have never done a ton with cars except for regular oil changes.
Really want to do a 5.3 lm7 swap.
This will be a daily driver for me, so any input is greatly appreciated.
My goal is to have this swap done and get the truck painted with an all in budget of about 5k. Ideally being able to upgrade the 5.3 with a can and maybe headers as well
Is that far from reality?
This is the only picture I have of the truck currently.

LS1's are just a scam nowadays, people think they are worth gold.
You could plop a 6.0 in there for less than a LS1 and make more torque than the LS1. Then add a camshaft and blow a stock LS1 away even further for a small cost.
Or like your plans, snag a 5.3 for 300-500 bucks, do 500-700 worth of cam/headers and have more power than the LS1 for less than what a LS1 goes for.

I can't believe how much people ask for them. It's crazy.
Found a 5.3 pretty close to me, 700 obo 72k. I'll try to add a pic, not sure what a good deal for one is, so I'm hoping to get as much insight as I can. Appreciate the help ahead of time.

It's not that good of deal. If there is no wire harness, no pedal and no TAC module that is just a bunch of added cost to make the DBW system work. DBW stuff needs the throttle body, pedal and TAC module to match, ideally all would be from the same vehicle instead of having to buy them new.
You could still buy the motor but I'd try it get it for cheaper if nothing else is included. Then get yourself a 01-02 drive by cable computer with a drive by cable harness. DBW does cost more to swap in because of the extra parts you need/
