Default 2.2 s10 questions and mods to improve mpg

last weekend i picked up an 95 s dime with 119k for a pretty fair deal. ive been in need of something that gets better than 8mpg and thatll keep my truck from seeing salt. after cleaning up the body some and finally getting it insured and registered its now road worthy. i had a few questions hoping i could find some answers

first of all what do these red line at? second is there a rev limiter? and most importantly other than e-fans exhaust and a cai is there to do on these without breakin the bank and picking up some mileage? also just for the record i think i now own the slowest thing ive ever been in lol

thanks

T.J.

Chevy Cavalier World

This site is full of good stuff, that only started getting developed in the last 2-3 years.

I've got a 95 Corsica 2.2 with 1.6 rockers, a mild port and polish job. I haven't finished the build yet, so no results on power increases, but I changed so much it's gonna be hard to tell what caused what increase.

I do plan on running a stg.2 cam in the future, with 98+ fuel injection swap and do some tuning myself (since the 95 computer can be tuned, I found out in the last year as well).

i had a 95 s10 6ft bed stick shift a few years ago.. managed to blow the engine with low oil pressure. bought another block bored .060 over with stock everything but plugs and wires.. plugs were the bosh 4 prongs and performance wires. was getting 35 mpg out of it with just doing that to it.

I've got a 2000 2.2/5speed. It has an Airraid intake, magnaflow cat and muffler, and I get 27-28mpg about 80% highway.

An OBX header would be my first move though, the stock manifold and downpipe on these trucks are a horrendous problem in every 2.2L S10 I've seen.

I tried porting as much of the stock exhaust manifold as I could, but a header is just so much better (and cheap!)

Get the eBay header first thing. I had a 96 s10 and the exhaust was horrible.

koots thanks for the link man, im definitley gonna do some digging thanks to the other members who responded as well. this turdbox has a cai and straight pipe. im thinking about throwing a cheap stock muffler on it since it probably needs some backpressure a new o2 and see what happens. as for the header idk if id really want to spend 150 but if its really that restrictive it may have to happen. as for the tuning part i dont have tuning knowledge but im sure ill figure something out. power by no means is the goal here, just some better mpgs lol

air up the tires, basic tune up and drive it like a gradma. the cheapest most effective way. after you spend $500 on the truck to achieve the best MPH, it will take 300,000 miles for the mods to pay themselves off.
