TR220-112 and stock converter

anyone on here done this? I know all the reasons to get a 3k rpm stall, but just curious if anyone has done the tr220 with the stock converter. I'll be getting a converter later on btw.

the other cam I was looking at is the old man truck cam (214/220 .600/.523 115lsa +2)

what're your thoughts?

another quick question. Between the 220 cams I'm lookin at (TR vs. TSP) would the .030" bigger lift on the TSP cam be that beneficial? It's a less expensive cam too.

I have a 212/218 HiLift in my truck without a higher stalled converter. I do have 4.10s though. It is very fun on the street and still good with gas around town. I wouldnt hesitate to go to 220/220 in my truck either, without a stall.

On the other hand, I didn't see a whole lot of difference with the cam and 3.42s in the rear. It needed 4.10s to wake up.

I will probably be the only one to tell you that you don't need a stall though. Some of these guys exaggerate the loss of bottom end with a higher duration cam.

I dont think its the LOSS of bottom end when you go with a bigger duration... the fact that you gain so much up top makes it feel a little mushy down low. IMO

My part-time friend (05FAMILYTRUCK) had a 224 in his crew cab with stock stall and 3.23 and it was really slow anything below 30mph. He ran a 16 all motor lol. When he put the 4.10s in you could tell a nice difference...it would do a burnout again hahaa. He just added a 3600 converter thats more 3800 and it runs low 14s

So he dropped about 2 seconds going from cammed with stock stall and 3.23s to 4.10s/3800 stall.

The way I see it, the low end can't be worse than the stock cam. I really like the XR265HR comp cam, but I think I might go with the 220 cam instead. Thanks for the input I just needed someone to comfirm that I wasn't indeed crazy lol. I'll be getting a cam around my bday (feb) so it'll be some time. I'm anxious, but wanna do it right the first time and not regret doing somethin else.

Randomhero ran around for a while with a 224 on the stock converter. He said it was a dog below 30 mph, but it can be done until you are ready for a converter.

get a converter first

jakebdb56 11-19-2007 07:11 PM

Hey bluecajun what converter you running now? I remember looking at the specs on your truck a LONG time ago on this forum but can't remember the stall you're running. You're the reason why I looked into a TR cam in the first place lol. I've got the optional HD tranny cooler, but I'm afraid it won't be enough with a 3k stall. what yall think?

bluecajun5.3 11-19-2007 08:09 PM

i'm running the yank SS3600 (9.5")
if you go with a yank TT3000 which is an 11" converter, you should be fine with the stock HD tranny cooler.
