And the stud-installed height (off the deck) is the same either way. The engine block determines which bolts are needed, and the heads interchange either way.

Do studs in a GEN III application require sealant like the GEN 1-E Vortec do? I remember guys studding Vortec 350's and having horrible coolant leak issues.

No because the holes are blind. ARP states that loctite can be used if desired, but I wont be.

Did head studs on a 6.0 powerstroke in a buddy's truck without pulling the motor or cab... if it can be done in that you can do it on your no problem. had set the back couple of studs through the head but wait till the head was in place to get them down into the block. They tightened up just like the rest of them no problem and have taken a ton of abuse since.

01 5.3L here and I've pulled the heads twice with all of the studs in and there aren't any clearance issues. An f-body is a different story however.

These are the early ones were the two outer bolts are shorter then the rest.
See the 2 that are mid length and threaded all the way up compared to the longer ones??? These are 99-03

I hear ya... but I've had my heads off and it just wasn't the case. I had 3 different length head bolts. Mine is an 05 and its the factory engine.

let us know how that goes... I was wondering if you could install a few of the studs after the head is on to try and make it easier.
