Stroking an LS1

Guys, I have searched and not found a lot. Most all posts I find on this are just questions with no answers. If I cant find what I'm looking for here I might sign up on LS1tech and see what they got stored.

As many of you know I have an '02 aluminum LS1 thats goin in my '01, but its on the backburner now because I'm almost done building my old 350 for my '85.

When I build it I want it to be a badass, not just a stock motor with heads and a cam. I keep throwing around the idea of forging it from the get-go. But the main question is should I stroke it.

I recently to the engine down, supposed to had 52,000 miles on it and prolly did, but I wonder what type of power adder/nos they had on it in its life, cause some of the bearings are shot and one of the pistons was broke. I brought the crank in the machine shop thats doing the work on my other 350 block, and he said he'd prolly have to grind that crank down, not polish it like I hoped.

So that leaves me here. I dont want to run a ground down crank with oversized bearings on a 400+ HP motor. If I have to aquire a new crank, I am thinking of stroking the motor.

What all is needed to make a stroker out of this 347? I'm assuming that comes out to a little less than 383....bigger crank? from what? longer stroke rods and different pistons?

Please help me grasp this idea, I want to build the best I can from the start. Thanks!

go over to ls1tech.com.....more info over there, u can get stock ls1 cranks for cheap

Really, it's just the cost difference in the crankshaft itself...you still have to machine the block, balance the assembly, etc the same between the two. I'd say for the extra few hundred bucks it'd be worth it to go with the stroker!

Buy an LSX block and start with a good platform...

No thanks I already spent $550 on a ls1 shortblock and that's what I'll be building

:cough: 383 :cough

ok david but how do you get there?

also, is the bore of the ls1 smaller than the bore of the older 350's? i bought some new pistons for my old 350 the other day and just for giggles stuck one up to the cylinder on my ls1 on the stand, and it wouldnt go in. Is this why they are a 347 and not a 350?

Yes a ls1 is smaller. A stock old 350 is 4 inch bore and 3.48 inch stroke. Call Callies and tell them what your after. They do make stroker kits for Ls1 engines. Or if your after a really nice package go for something like this.http://www.hiperperformance.com/serv...LS6-383/Detail

Your LS1 specs. Bore 3.465 (99)mm and the stroke is 3.622 (92)mm. All ls1 ls6 lq4 lq9 and 5.3 cranks share the same stroke the 4.8 is the only smaller one. The bore is what makes the differances.

Correction: "Your LS1 specs. Bore 3.898 (99)mm and the stroke is 3.622 (92)mm."

The Callies rep on here has a better deal going than shown in the link you provided.....

OOOPPPPSSS. you are correct sir. Dont know what i was thinking. Thats one tiny bore. I agree on going with Callies thats why I mentioned it in my post. They gave me an awesome quote on a 408 kit for my 6.0. I was just throwing up a link to show a well built kit.

if not mistaken a 4" crank and 6.125 rod will get ya to a 383 ;) i'd run a 10.5-8.1 cr ;) or possibly try and get to 11:1

guess i need to put my sig back with all my mods lol, been getting alot of pms about the time i am showing in my sig, most think i am running a small shot of nitrous which i am not, but yeah they are newbz so i can see why the pms ;)

with that said: my mods consist of a stock lq9 short block, ls3 heads ported with light weight valves, a nice little 235/239 cam, ewp, fast 102MM intake and 102mm throttlebody with kooks 1 7/8 to 2" headers through dual exhaust, set up with a level 2 performabuilt tranny with a 4 link on a stock 10 bolt with a trutrack and soon to be 4:88 gear ;) and a badass tune from quik ;)

Give me a ring this evening Nick. I've done some brainstorming on this situation ;) I really hate to hear about those bad parts, but if you were considering building it up right from the get-go it just made the decision for you!
