rate my setup
Ok, so after my recent thread about some shavings in my oil, i thought it might be a good time to do a whole top end rebuild. My plans are as follows:
prc 2.5 5.3 heads cometic .040 gaskets arp head bolts new oil pump....melling or ported ls6? new rockers, looking at harland sharp non adjustable rollers timing set- ls2 chain only or the whole timing set? ls7 lifters, ls2 trays (already recieved them) Budget is a concern, so if you see anything not really needed then let me know. I currently have 82xxx on the truck and mileage will continue as it is my dd and have a 3,000 mile roadtrip planned. |

You can save a few bucks and do a trunion bearing upgrade on your stock LS rockers vs. new rockers.

What injectors are you running?
I wouldn't worry about the rocker arms. Or the trunion upgrade. Not real sure if the timing chain is a necessity either. I'm running the one that came on the 6.0 that was swapped in. It had slack in it. But they all do. The 4.8 with 160k that came out was put in someone elses truck and is still running w/ the stock timing chain. Same story on the oil pump. Unless you have oil pressure issues, I'd run the oil pump you have also. Its a gear pump. They don't wear out that easy. Still running the stocker in my 6.0. The one in the 4.8 w/ all the miles put up good psi before we took the engine out of the truck. Skeet raised a good point about the shavings. You're 100% on where they came from? |
Stupid I know but I think the drip pan might have been dirty to begin with. When I wrenched off the k&n some paint and metal flaked off in the pan. I changed the oil again just to check it out and the plug had just a spec of metal. Wouldn't even call or a shaving really
