OP - there a hundreds of cams that will give you a loud choppy idle. You could go with anything from a low 220's cam on a very tight LSA to 230+ if you want to. You need to provide more info about other preferences.

Do you have a desired rpm range?
Do you run a stall?
What is your max desired lift?
Do you mind the sewing machine sound that can sometimes be associated with high lift?
Do you want to run double springs?

i will be running a 3400 stall, 918 springs. looking maybe a 109 or 110 lsa. Dont want a lift that is gonna hurt the engine either.

for the chopiness, i have always like a cam that MTI used to spec out, it was a reverse split, 230/227 .57x/.57x 111lsa, it chopped real good on a 6.0 so it should lope a whole lot better on a 5.3

Take a look at what Comp did with their Thumper cams compared to others. A lot longer exhaust duration than intake, tighter LSA and more advance ground in.

I'm having a problem finding the specs for those Thumpr cams on Comp's site...if someone could provide a link to the specs that would be cool.

If you're just looking for a choppy, lopey sounding cam, you want a lot of overlap, so long intake duration and a tight LSA is in order. The lobe design and valve events also take a role in this sound. Many of today's cams have agressive ramp rates that actually provide more performance with less lope. Set the engine idle as low as possible without stalling and that will help. If you're looking for an inexpensive alternative, the GM Hot Cam is mean sounding and is kind to the valvetrain with it's low lift of .525/.525 and less agressive lobes. It's available as a kit with springs also. The rest of the specs are 219/228 112. It's not as good of a performer as the newer grinds out there available in the aftermarket, but all of the clips that I've heard of it sound cool...you can probably hear it on Youtube. I've often dreamed of having enough cash to finish my LQ9 project and keeping my 5.3 for an old hot rod (say a 31 Ford 5 window coupe with a 32 grille, fenderless, satin black...just a quick thought lol), and just getting a hot cam for it, and the newest addition would be the new Edelbrock intake with it's tunnel ram styling

Yea, me too, especially for a 5.3. with almost 220 intake duration and the tight 109 LSA that's a bunch of overlap as it is. It will still sound mean and have a more useable RPM range with better low end torque than the other 2. I've noticed that Comp has always been quite liberal when listing their cams' powerbands and where the power starts...Thanks for posting the specs twolow02fransen.

I'm assuming that Comp has ground in so much exhaust duration to help evacuate the exhaust gasses since there will be a lot of exhaust revision into the intake with the tight LSA and the intake and exhaust valve being open at the same time so long.
