Default Here goes another “help me pick my cam” thread

New setup will be:
-ly6 Thompson Motorsports shortblock with flat top pistons
-243 heads w/ TSP dual valve springs, ls3 rockers
-ls7 lifters
-7.4 pushrods
-GM mls Headgaskets
Compression should be between 10:6 to 11:1

The truck:
-2007 NNBS ccsb
-4l65e
-2600 stall
-3:73 gears
-285/70/17 tire’s

Current cam when the truck had a 5.3
Texas Speed spec’d Custom grind
216/226 .600/.600 114lsa

...was a DOG in the 5.3, and felt slower then stock even with the stall.
Hoping to find something off the shelf with lots of low end/mid range grunt.

All suggestions are welcome. Personal experience from those of you with heavy N/A trucks would be awesome.
Thanks fellas!

That cam in the 6.0 should make plenty of low to mid grunt.

I would go with a CircleD 3200 278mm stall as well.

On the flip side, in my old 5.3 I ran the Comp LSR265 cam. That cam had all kinds of low end grunt.

Go ahead and scope out doing an 80e swap. You're going to need it eventually.

Good to know, I’ve been considering stepping up to the 3000 range stall. Going from the stock stall to 2600 was first and best mod I’d done to this truck. So maybe I don’t need a new cam after all?

As crazy as it sounds, I would change the stall first and reuse the old cam. It has -7 degrees of overlap and should have plenty of low end.

Doesn’t sound crazy at all. My first go around, the stall was a more effective modification. Not crazy to think it would be different now.

I’ll give you one more, I would run it with the stall that you have and see how it feels. That is a mild cam for a 6.0

Way back when I had an 215/227 115+3 cam that was a mild blower cam, ran it NA briefly and it ran great.

Either a little smaller cam or a little more stall will give you the added low end.

The drop in truck cams are the best for low end power.

But that motor with that compression is gonna give you quite a boost in the low end compared to a 5.3, 9.5:1 motor. I'd run it with that cam, or do a drop in truck cam, they have a lot of advance in them and keep up the low end and even gain power over stock cams at 2500 rpm, most lose out till around 4k rpm then make more power than stock.

Also, if you aren't on 91 or 93 octane, step that up and turn up the timing, that'll help with the low end too.

If you want even more, call TSP and discuss advancing the cam a couple of degrees. It can help low end, but it can also hurt depending on valve events, so you need to talk to someone with very thorough knowledge of that cam and of valve events.

Currently already on a 91 tune, and already have a 2600 stall.

Honestly you guys are giving me the easy way out..Lol
I think I’ll try and run what I already have and worst case, buy a larger 2800-3200
stall.

A good amount of research on PT was done before putting this together...and countless calls to a bunch of companies, (etc) which is why I ended up with this final product. The idea is to have a reliable, fun, well mannered engine that should go another 100k+ miles. If it gets boring, a LSA blower might solve that problem.
A nasty 408 stroker motor would’ve been in the.cards if this truck was weekend warrior, but it’s a work vehicle with over a quarter million miles already...

Thanks for all the input guys, I’ve found my answer.

My truck is a 5 speed but just throwing my two cents in as well.

I have a TMS 370 with flat tops and milled 243's sitting at around 11:1 comp and I'm running their 226/232 578/587 115lsa cam and I'm really happy with it. Plenty of low end and it has great street manners.
