Budget 5.3L for Boost

Have this idea rattling around in my head... I currently am running my stock LM7 with ~115k miles and am thinking it may not last long with my ~600rwhp goal. Apparently the rods are pretty weak on these motors and will be the first thing to go. So I'm thinking of building up another 5.3L as a spare.

Block: My thought is to use a used 5.3L iron block, or would an aluminum 5.3L block be able to handle the power? Is a Gen IV iron block better than a Gen III?
Crank: Stock should suffice.
Rods: No idea.
Pistons: No idea.
Rings: New, gapped for boost?
Misc: ARP rod bolts. New main and rod bearings. Maybe ARP main studs?

What sponsors can build this for me? I can't find any that offer a simple 5.3L online, but perhaps I just need to ask them.

Get a 2005+ 5.3. Will do 600 easy.

You mean a stock junkyard 5.3L motor?

That would be the cheapest option, but if I'm going to replace the motor then I might as well spend a little more and beefen it up. 600rwhp is the goal, but once I reach it then it's onwards and upwards :eyes:

About what power are they good for? :hmmm:

Spend as much as you like, its your money. But the late model 5.3 will probably last forever at 600 with a proper tune.

do head studs, cam, rod bolts and springs

Blackpanther99 06-13-2013 08:26 PM

600 RWHP will be a cake! Get a specd cam for the turbo you will be using, springs, better rods, head studs, and 60lb injectors.

How much boost in general will it take to hit 600 rwhp on a 5.3 in a truck?

≈15#'s

Mangled03gmc 06-13-2013 08:58 PM

15 easy. Even your current set up will last a long time on that. Or like said get a 05 up 5.3

Ferocity02 06-14-2013 12:13 AM

My current motor is cammed, heads (799 unported), studs, springs. But the bottom end is stock. I'm not sure how long the bottom end (particularly the rods) will last.

there is only one way to find out :)

We have been running 16psi on my buddys 2007 5.3 for a few years now and its been abused some kinda bad. It has a isky 212 114 lsa cam and isky springs in it and thats it.

The tune is goin to be your limiting factor.

Ferocity02 06-14-2013 11:55 AM

My tune is pretty safe at the moment, ~11.3 afr and ~14 deg of timing on 91 octane (assuming E10) at 9.5psi. Meth injection is planned for the future but not used at the moment for tuning.

What makes the gen IV 5.3L stronger than a gen III? Just the rods?

What engine designation should I be looking for... LM7, LY5, ...? And how can I tell by looking at the motor from the outside?

La Chicken G B N L 06-25-2013 07:41 PM

My 5.3 made 837 rwhp on 16 # , i did ported 243's and boost cam . It came out a 06 yukon with 75k on the clock .

Kind of similar question, its 04.5 and newer correct? Looking at an 04, how do I tell if its an 04.5?

Subscribed for similar questions. Was looking at a motor the other day and didn't know where to look for the casting numbers.
