Budget 4.8 Build!

Budget 4.8 Build!
Well i'm new to the forum but not new to ls engines. I have been researching cam swaps and have come to the conclusion that i want a comp cams 54-600-11, which is their Thumper cam. At the moment i have a 2005 RCSB with CAI, TBS, and a servo. i am going to keep the stock stall and was wondering how much my gas mileage would be affected and how much gain i'm looking at over stock. I was told by an ls engine builder that i would be alright with the stock valve-train running this cam. i was also told by the same person that i could run this cam as a daily driver without a tune. obviously i would get it tuned eventually but according to him i wouldn't have to right away. I'm not out to build the fastest truck on the streets i just like the cammed sound. i also will be going with TransGo Performance 4L60E-HD2 shift kit. Anyone have bad luck with these?
Main Concerns: Gas Milage and Tuning.

Seems a little big for a stock stall and no tuning.
You will definitely need new Valve Springs for a cam swap and possibly push rods!!!
Gas mileage is going to depend more on your driving habits and tune more then anything.
Around town you may loose 1-2 miles

that would have a mean top end with some headers.
If you can drive it without a tune your doin good!
And thats a pretty big cam for a stock 4.8 with stock torque converter
What gears does it have? 3.42s?

Well on comp's website it says the cam is suitable for a 2000+ stall and stock is about 2200. I have 3.23's. I guess I will call TSP and ask them about the size and see whether or not they tell me to change springs. Maybe I will end up going with a smaller cam where I don't have to change all of that. Either way new springs and rods are like another 270 bucks. Have you guys had any luck with mail order tunes or would you prefer a Hp tuners or diablo? Also headers would be about 500 bucks. You guys know the right way to delete the cats and the rear o2 sensors?
Thanks

You will need new Valve springs even for a mild cam to handle the extra lift.
HP tuners and EFI live are do it your self programs to write your own tune.
I know Diablo can have custom tunes written but some one else will have to do it for you. You may want to contact them as they sponser this site.

I highly doubt that cam would even idle without a tune. My 216/220 on 110+2 wouldn't in my 4.8. Then I got the FAST programmer with cam tuning. That was just a whole lot of surging and stalling and lack of vacuum for the brakes. Ton of driveability issues. Then I got EFI Live and slowly figured out how to make it act more civilized.

I have a 227/235 on a 113lsa in my 6.0 and I could barely make it down the street. As for the springs and PR, I would pick up a good set. Stock springs were not designed for the increased lift of aftermarket cams. It would suck to cheap out and break a spring and run the chance of dropping a valve and destroying your engine. Just my .02
