Best cam for 5.3L in 4wd
#21
thanks for the info guys I am leaning closer to a 2000+ converter just not real fond of the 3000+ especially when I go off roading. If it was to load up then break the tires loose on a hill climb that just has problems written all over it.
on another note what is you guys opinion on the monster in a box kits and there converters

Either Circle D's HP 278 mm 2800 or Yanks TT 278 mm 2600
Both have great manners for daily driving, good performance and will still tow heavy loads.
Or just leave in the stock converter.

I still think the 300mm will be better suited for you since you are towing such a heavy load. Be sure and run a good transmission cooler and you should have any trans issues.
If you want a "towing" cam and no converter, you should look into the LS6 cam. It will add about 10-15 hp and run fine on stock converter.
Thanks!

I wouldn't waste my time on a cam swap for the LS6 cam. Go with the 212/218 on 112 it will be a tq monster, perfect for climbing those hills off road, and not down shifting going up hill with a trailer as much.
I haven't herd anything good about monster transmission. I still say go with the stock since you are not "racing" the truck and nobody cares about how fast you make a lap off road lol
I have seen many setups with the 212/218 range cam on the stock converter that drives like stock with way more power, screaming on the highway at 2-3K rpm, the stock converter SUCKS for 1-2 and 2-3 shift at WOT drops the rpms back down to 3800-4100 range which takes forever to get back to the 5000 rpm power band.
I think we should start a thread of everybody's converter videos with dd and WOT runs to help give people ideas of what the converter they are looking to purchase performs like.

Take a look at some of the offerings from Vinci performance. I just installed their "towing and performance" cam into a 6.0 and couldn't be happier. It has LPP headers, ORY into dual 2.5 exh, stock 317's cut .020 with LS6 springs, and a tune from Nelson. Truck has a 3.73's spun by a 4L80E with a yank 2400 stall converter. Pulls hard to 6k and will tow anything I need to hook up to.

Don't be scared with having a cammed/stalled engine and pulling a heavy load. I pull my boat with no issues what so ever.
Get a 40K tranny cooler, run it in tandom with the stock radiator cooler.
I have a few vids up of my pulling my boat

New to forum but I've been reading the last 3 pages on this thread about recommended cams so my question is what is going to be the noticeable difference in a 212/218 114 lsa and the same cam with a 112 lsa. I have a 2000 chevy 1500 5.3. My plan is to do the kooks 1 7/8 LT headers/cam/heads this year. I'm turning 33" A/T Tires 20" rims. I saw another cam 215/223 112 lsa. Plans will eventually include changing the stall as well but one thing at a time.
