Default 408 Cam

I am doing a 408 buildup and I called Comp today to see what they recommended for the cam. I told them I was looking for a good Street/strip cam and that I don't tow anything any that I would be running a 3000 converter w/4.10's. They said that for a reg cab truck they would recommend a custom ground cam. I don't know exactly what all the specifics of the motor, compression ration, etc.... are yet but the specs on the cam where 232/238 @.050" and .595/.603 on 114lsa. The heads will be mildly worked 317's. What kind of power you think I could expect?

That is too small check my sig you need somethin like that in a light as truck. Hell Im going with it in my 5500# pig with a 3200 stall and it will be fine. The CI of the engine will help with the tq loss down low of a big cam not to mention when you really want to haul *** you have the nitrous to help you out of hole. He is 2wd also so you dont want to much power down low or it will all go up in smoke it would be better IMO to get a cam that comes on hard at 3500 wher eyou will ahve traction. Then when you shift with the shift extension you will drop right back down in to the peak power curve of the cam and really haul *** that cam the recommended is more of a torque cam.

Yeah that was just a preliminary "guess". Once I figure what kind of compression it will have, how far the pistons are in the hole, etc. I was kind of thinking like you, maybe something a bit bigger.

If you want to go off the shelf jsut get a t-rex cam that is a tad bit bigger than what I have. You will have to go dual springs due to the high lift but will make some awesome upper rpm power. Slightly worked 6L will be plenty IMO. I went with the DARTs so later on I can slap a set of 6L heads on and drop the CR so I can go FI without having to rebuild the bottom end. You gotta think ahead

This one will just be Bottle Fed. About 200 gulps worth. I thought about a shelf cam, but Comp doesn't charge any more for a custom one off cam so thats the route I will go prob.

The t-rex specs to me would be what you would want anyway

242/248 is pretty beefy.....I have heard that cam in a 408 in a T/A and it was beastly, but he was running a 4000 stall. Don't know if I want to do that much, he still drives this thing every day.

for sure go bigger i had a cam custom specded for my needs and it was damn near the same size as the one you listed and i speced it for a 408 with 11:1 comp. dart225 heads, 1700 stall and vehicle wieght of 6200 pounds and power range of 1500 to 6500. and it would be ground for alittle nitrous.

i'd expect around 480-500hp at the flywheel. that cam should be pretty good from around 2500 and up. with your converter you'll never see a dead spot in the cam. shift points will be around 6000-6200.

You should expect ok results. Probably as the person above me stated. Check out Texas Speed though... their Magic Sticks are some wicked cams. I've got a buddy with an 02 LS1 camaro Z28 that ran an 11.82 all motor with one of those in it. Other mods were 12-bolt, 4:10, 6-speed, stock heads, bolt ons, Drag Radials, etc.
