Default Ring gap?

So I’m getting ready to assemble my first LS, I was checking ring gap in the new rings and they’re all at least .024” on the top ring. All the specs I’m seeing say that an N/A engine should run a .016 - .018 gap on the top ring. Am I right in thinking that this is too much gap?

Are you going to boost the hell out of it? If so do a search here as that's in the ballpark if I remember. More gap is preferred. If no boost then maybe too much. Just look around here and you'll find an answer for sure. Sorry I'm not more help.

I'd run it. Probably not even worth 1hp over all, and a new set of rings will set you back $150+

Might lead to early oil contamination, so if it's a DD, you might want tighter rings to save on more frequent oil changes

No boost and it’ll probably be driven almost daily.

You've read our opinions. The rest is up to you and your wallet.

Have you verified the technique you're using to get the ring square in the bore? Is the bore the appropriate dia or is it a little loose?

I squared the ring about an inch down into the bore. The bore is 3.998 on my caliper.

Use a piston with a junk ring on the second land to square the new ring in the bore

3.998 on a caliper is prob close enough for what we are doing. I assume it was bored to 4.00?

It’s a stock bore LQ4, the machine shop just cleaned it for me. I’ve tried all 8 holes with all 8 new rings and got the
same result. I’ll email the place I got them from, if that doesn’t help I guess I’ll spend some more money.
