Default My DOD AFM cam replacement choice made my stock 5.3L engine a real dog

Can anyone share horror stories of cam choices that were bad decisions in order to help those undecided souls, such as myself, from making costly time and money mistakes? Melling makes an almost identical stock cam for dod afm motors. I am trying to get best MPG but do not want to build a led sled either (Chevy Avalanche pickup).

The Gen III 5.3 L33 camshaft, 12583623 is the same grind as your original without AFM.

Thanks swath for recommendation but I like to see specs on cam , I have scoured the internet and can not find them for the cam you have suggested. I have talked to melling about mc1390 cam and surprisingly they told me the single bolt cams they sell they more than likely buy them directly from GM! Looking heavily at GM 12625437 also ---when will all the madness endddddddd .

@toomuchjunk

In the future if you need to know stock cam specs go to https://help.summitracing.com and type in the RPO code of the engine you are looking for...in this case I typed in "L33"...this will provide info on the block, rotating assembly, cylinder heads, cam specs, valvetrain, etc...

193/193 .482/.482 116LSA

IMO for your goals you should stick with a factory cam as suggested by swathdiver....as far as I know there is no cam out there that was designed to increase MPG, the factory cams will produce the best MPG over any after market cam out there...

Also, if you are going to lift it and add bigger wheels and tires you should really consider re-gearing the truck to at least a 3.73, but really should go with 4.10's...these trucks are tanks at 6k lbs are already dogs from the factory, literally everything you want to do will kill performance and MPG

That is a smaller camshaft: 191-190 .457-.466 114

Like 01FormulaTA stated, the specs at Summit's database is pretty accurate, being updated by Brian Nutter, a wealth of LS knowledge.

As far as I am aware, these are the cam specs for the Gen4 5.3 Silverado engines
These specs are off of Summit Racings Database.

Thanks for all the people who responded, Swath you got the cam specs spot on! I am not looking to get better mileage just trying to make truck as close to factory specs as I can to prevent any headaches down the road.
