That’s crazy man! I had the same thing happen to me!! Luckily I found it when assembling the motor and putting the oil pump on! I had hell finding the plug and finally ended up making one and beating it in with a hammer and socket!

I just wish I found it sooner I spent about $500 in oil, filters, pickup tube and a engine oil preluber. I thought for sure it would be something I was doing wrong not the professional engine builder. Just glad its running now and can't wait to get it broke in. I really hope to push it to the 700hp range.

many machine shop removed the old one when they cleaned, decked, line honed, and bored the block! They didn’t put a new one back in and failed to mention it to me!

FYI, Its a 5/8 cup plug also known as an expansion plug or a freeze plug, which would be available at most real good Auto parts stores that carry stuff like that... Some hardware stores even carry those types of things... Gm used to charge about $5 for them. I have bought them from a hardware store for like .50 cents each.

My 408 is still on the stand from being built like 2 yrs ago.

So I went and checked it, thanks to this thread. Low and behold, sumbitch doesn't have the front galley plug!

You potentially saved 2 motors by starting this thread. I'll buy you a beer if I ever meet you in person

That's awesome! Glad you spotted it before you installed the engine.

Also I've been known to travel great distances for a free beer
