Can someone tell me what this piece is, and if it's necessary?

Default Can someone tell me what this piece is, and if it's necessary?

Just finished my truck up and took it for its first decent drive to a friends house about 40 mins away. He texted me a picture the next day of a piece that was sitting in his driveway. Looks like it was against my exhaust and melted the hose. I remember seeing this coming from the top of my 6l80 transmission but not really sure what it was for or if it's totally necessary. Thought it may have been some kind of filter to a breather but not sure. Truck hasn't run any different without it.

It's the filter/vent for the evap near the gas tank. They run it way up by the transmission to keep dirt and dust away.

If you still run the EVAP system just cut the melted bit off and shove a rubber hose over the end and onto the other side.
