Default VVT vs Non VVT Cam Swap

Have a 2012 Sierra Denali with Blackbear autocal tuning, Speed Engineering 1 7/8 long tubes, Speed Engineering 3in true duals, Airaid mit, and K&N drop in filter. Wanting to do a cam swap and tow often. I have narrowed my choices down between a tsp vvt 1.2 and a btr stg 2 cam. Does anyone have any suggestions on which cam to go with to keep the most towing performance? Also if you have another suggestion for a different cam list it.

I just helped my brother with his set up, with almost identical mods as you with the exception of a Circle D 3200 RPM stall and an E85 tune, in an 08 Sierra Denali 6.2. After dong the research, we got the VVT 2.2 cam . With the long tubes and no cats, it is loud. I think the 1.2 would be a better cam for you. I originally planned to get a non-VVT cam, but Texas Speed assured the VVT cam was going to be a better choice. So far, no complaints from him. Its making good power and pulls hard up top. Just too loud for my liking.

I'm pretty sure the 2012's have AFM, and you will likely want to change out the lifters. They are known to fail with just moderate lift cams.

Thanks for the response I'm leaning towards the TSP 1.2 cam. My truck has the L9H engine so it only has vvt so I don't have to worry about removing AFM.

A good friend and I both bought a custom grind from Texas Speed. He's gotten his installed, and he can't stop raving about it. He towed a trailer with 2 UTV's to Colorado from Tulsa, OK and he said it never felt so good, ran better than before (duh). He also ran a 14.01 at the track, but he couldn't get it to hook up off the line. He's got essentially the same mods as you, except he used Ed Wright for his tune. Mine's still on the shelf waiting for when I get the time or the money to install it. His truck is a 2012 Silverado 4x4 with the 6.2. Here's the specs - VVT | 214/228 .600/.600 114+4.

That cam sounds more like what I’m wanting. I’d like to keep the torque curve in the lower rpms if possible. Did they still send phaser tables for your tune with the cam?

No tables that I'm aware of. Ed Wright loved that cam for the truck, and he had no problem tuning for it. Justin at Black Bear said it would be no problem to do with my AutoCal, even without the tables. Derek at Texas Speed hooked us up with that cam based on our requests. We wanted the same as you it sounds like - keep (or improve) tow performance (no/minimal loss on the low end), keep stock converter, most gains possible with matching the first two. The thing flies now. He and I ran against each other a couple of times at the track after he got the cam installed. My best time that day was 14.778. Only difference between our trucks is headers, cam, and tune.

Do you have any videos of the truck at idle or driving with the cam? I'm going to give TSP a call today about this cam. Thanks for the info I'm glad to have found someone wanting the same performance as I do.

I do not currently. It's his work truck, and I only see him on weekends when he's in the family hauler Denali XL.

I'm going to give tsp a call this week and see what cam the recommend to me. I live in Southeast Ky so I'm curious to see what they say with me living in the mountains and having elevation changes.
