Currious how first gear feels with 3.90s behind the A6. Still feel useable or is it shifting to second almost immediately?

What cruise rpm to you get your best mileage at ? Towing with my old 5.3 truck it liked 2200 below that towing mileage fell off .trying to decide between 3.90's & 4.10's for my 2010 or tow in 5th withthe 3.42's

I would have to say that the gears do help by allowing the truck to not have to work so hard, i got 2mpg better all around when i went to 3.73 gears in my truck, I too am interested in the tune and how you maxed the AFM out..

i would say that the power potential of a 5.3 with headers and such is probably great enough for me.. Perhaps i could even afford a truck with the 5.3, seems the 6.2 trucks are as rare as hens teeth here in IN and they pack a premium price when you do find them. Perhaps i should wait until Summer when gas is 4$ a gallon and they will be giving those gas hogs away

ok guys another update, drove a total of 500 miles and its a little better than i thought, 23.8mpgs, i also have heavy chrome 22 on it.
heres what i found.

driving under 55mph on flat or slight hills the truck will stay in V4 mode and pull upper 20s almost 30mpgs. i reset my avg/mpgs for the drive home yesterday and it was 26mpg. stop and go like always hurts these trucks but once it was rolling i reset it, 26mpgs on a 20mile drive (V4 90% of the way). over 65-70mph the mileage drops to 22 but id does not stay in V4 mode nearly as much and the rpms at 70mph at 2000 ish.

some changes i made to the tune was just released in the new hptuner beta software. ive gone through my tune with a fine tooth comb. but here is a few to get going.

0% converter slip in V8 mode,
10% converter slip in V4 mode
0- Torque management
Bumped V4 timing by 4* in certain areas, 8*+ in other areas
made changes to AFM tables.


Conclusion for 3.08 gears trucks-

Stock 3.08s are horrible, the A4 deep first gear cannot over come the issue. First gear with A6 3.90 gear set is an improvement but no where near being too much gear. Even after my gear swap i would probably do a 4.10 next time. I would however, NOT CONSIDER a 3.73.

if you drive your truck under 60mph more than 50% of the time, a gear swap will help 4-5mpg

if you drive highway all the time, you still will pick up 1-2mpgs.


Hope this helps anyone on the fence.

Chris .........appreciate your sharing this info ......and yes my experience in these heavy 5.3 trucks was gear swap helps mileage for sure in stop & go, never bothered to really check on highway but was not noticbly worse ......now that I have a new AFM 6spd 5.3 I thought the 3.42 would be good ......but not the case I will now go 4.10 .......its a daily driver and tow rig ..........the AFM tuning intriques me, did not realize converter slip was a parameter that effected AFM ......Thanks

the truck went 9.90 at 71.60 with a 2.29 60ft, stock with a tune. is that good? truck is a 2010 cc 4x2 3.90 gear 5.3 a6

They usually do 10.5-.8 here in Los Angeles...
Dude you went to 3:73 and gain gas mileage? I didn't see no difference and I'm on stock 20's...

I don't have HPTuners installed on this computer yet so I can't verify, but I dont think slip does affect AFM... If you reduce the slip it improves the driveline efficiency. Slipping is power that is not being converted to forward motion, just heat.

For reference, here is a 6.2/6l80e/3.42 combination. Double047 went 9.248 in the 1/8.

Well that was for ig109 .. Sorry got lazy to put his name lol..

Coban... If I go with smaller tire will that be better... These truck look ugly if you put anything smaller than 20 inch wheels IMO

Ps.. Here in Los Angeles we already paying $4.15 a gallon 91 octane
