160 Thermostat in 09 Silvy (need help, answers please)

Default 160 Thermostat in 09 Silvy (need help, answers please)

Alright. I have heard that putting a 160 stat in the New body style truck won't really help that much in any way.

I know you're supposed to get a tune when you put it in to get is full potentional but I got into a arguement wiht my friend about this yesterday because he ordered a 160 stat for his 09 rcsb 5.3 Silverado.

I keep telling him that aint gonna make any kind of difference performance or even helping wise because the newer body style truck need to run a little warmer for better combustion. I have had lots of people tell me the same thing but he still donesn't believe me.

He had a older model, 2000 I think, that he keep comparing his new model to. I keep trying to tell him its still different.


I'm just needing ya'll info on this. Does a 160 thermostat help in the NNBS trucks? Figured I would try a performance forum so I could have something to show him later.

it only made mine waste more gas but, mines an 06 model

I put. Lingerfelter 160* stat on my. nnbs .. My tuner set fans to earlier. Degree' temps' and it helps out during hot summers' it runs a bit colder than oem 210

The OE stat is 195, but your actual temp varies (+/- 195). The trucks that need a tune to take advantage of it are the trucks equipped with electric fans (06+ I believe).

I'm not a huge fan of the 160/180 thermostats, I don't see them helping performance at all, but if you live in an area with extreme summer temps (105+) it can be somewhat helpful.

So in other words I was right. It ain't going to do really anything at all other than make the motor run just a little bit cooler.

Yeah i have a SLP 160 thermo on my 09 5.3 and it doesnt seem to have changed anything the reason i got mine is because I live down here in South Tx and during the summer it can get pretty hot.....The guy who tuned my truck set everything up on it tho like fan run and off time and set timing to it. Like i said i dont feel any power but it does keep the truck cool in the summer months

08Chevy, I've seen temps up to around 95*C at light cruise in my part of the world, and after a WOT run temps get up to 100+*C... if you live in an environment where it is hot, it would help you out a ton! Too hot of an engine will cause detonation, specially if your on performance trucks (Your not exactly using your truck to pick up the kids from school).

The ECT gauge won't be on 1/4 like the NBS trucks, but it should be a notch under 1/2. Thats around 85-88*C.

I have a 160 SLP t-stat in my 2007 5.3 LY5. Also running underdrive pulleys. On my Aeroscan digital gauge my normal coolant temp is 179-185. Before the pulleys it ran about 5 degrees cooler. The drop in coolant temp is not as dramatic as I thought it would be. 185 degrees is perfect for the LS motors.

so would you guys recommend it along with a tranny cooler just to keep the truck cooler during the nice 100* weather here in South TX ?

Does it affect the truck in the winter months?

I am in So Cal where most of the time it's mid 70's and for a few months in the summer it's warmer. I think the lower t-stat helps. The easiest way to make a transmission last longer is to keep the fluid cooler. As far as winter, where I live it does not get colder than 35-40 degrees F. I have had no problems.
