i like the idea of going with a 2 piece shaft. i talked to dynotech engineering some about them making one for my truck. i want to send them 2 4" dia chromoly shafts out of a stock car and have them mod it with the slip joint to work and leave the other one at its normal length. they said it would weigh a lot and would rather me run a 3". not sure if they rather just make a new one and get more money or if the weight really does matter that much... ive got a 72" long 5" diameter alum 1 piece in there now and i dont trust it over a 100

honestly, a lot of guys are just running a stock 2 peice with better ujoints and it high speed balanced. thats why im going this route vs spending the cash on a custom 2 peice and blah blah! im not making 1000rwhp and running 150-200mph in the 1/4. i dont run over 110 anyways bc i dont have enough HP to keep going. i just want the peace of mind of a 2 peice and it not exploding on me.
ive only heard of a couple of guys going high speed balanced 1 peice, but i dont trust it.
Skipperdaddy, ill be making yours tomorrow, but like i said i wont have the carrier mount figured out just yet.

great info man i also will be doing this conversion to mine pretty soon im with you on getting them balanced and adding some good u joints I see it as cheap insurance to save yourself alot of troubles. I will be using the crossmember from the ex. cab I took the drive shaft from with a little bit of modification and welding i think it should turn out great.

yeah if you have a welding machine, honestly. all you need is a 2x2x 3/16 square tubing, 3/16 flat plate for the carrier mount, and the ends to give a bigger welding surface. but i dont have a mig so im stuck with this way. i guess IF the performabuilt ill be buying doesnt hold up well with me then ill go 80e and ill redo the whole set up bc by then ill have my shop and a mig

Good idea but I would make it fit inside the frame rails. The tube hanging down is going to look goofy imo and gives another point to get hung up on if you lower it.
Here is the crossmember I made for my truck a few years ago. 1 3/4" .120 wall tube completely bolt on installation and fits inside the frame. I also am using a factory ext. cab 2 pc shaft with new u-joints.

i gotta get this for my sierra, i have a 2002 Ext cab 2-piece sitting in my garage. But when my bro n i were trying to remove the old hardware from it, we bent the damn thing. Theres a local shop that can repair it and rebalance it. I think im gonna have that done soon.
What are the "upgraded" u-joints. and what yokes will be needed?
Ill keep checking out this thread for advise on the install. If not, have someone do it too
