What is this noise about a black box on our cars?

I have been involved in several conversations regarding a "black box" that records are driving habits. Is this just the PCM? If so, how do I erase and/or disable it?

I am not cool with my driving habits being recorded, and I really hate that my driving habits can be used against me. I paid for the damn car, I shouldn't be subjected to the fucking government's monitoring :ripped:

No black boxes that record your driving. The only way that something is recorded is if a code sets. It will store the paramaters when the code set.

I saw a story about this on one of those news shows, like 20/20 or something. GM cars were the most frequent ones that had the boxes. It sounds like you got it about like I remember it. I searched the web and this site and found nothing else about it. I agree though ... it seems like a bit of invasion of privacy, and a potential lawsuit against GM for monitoring me without my consent, because I damn sure wouldn't have authorized them to do so.

Now that I think about it, if you have OnStar, they can monitor your every move. But Im guessing only if you suscribe to it.

If I remember it only stors like 30 seconds of driving. If you air bags go off it stops recording so they can see what was going on right befor impact but I could be wrong on this.

I remember hearing about this kinda stuff awhile back, but it was a voluntary system that could be installed by companies interested in whether or not there company vehicles were being abused, or if employees were speeding, or for the inquisitive parent to find out there teenagers driving habits.

Two things that piss me off to no end.
TIVO monitors and records what you do with your TV. They can use and sell the data for anything the see fit.
On-Star can track your every move, and can be listening to inside your vehicle at any time without you knowing. Your On-Star works all the time, you paying for the service only allows you to use it.

If I ever wreck my truck I am taking that SOB outta there before the tow truck arrives ! I don't like all the infringements on our privacy nowadays either.
