Walbro pump and fuel level

For you guys with Walbro's or other aftermarket in-tank pumps, do you try to keep at least a small amount of fuel in the tank to help cool the pump or prevent it from going dry? I recently installed a generic Walbro 255.

I recall when I put the Racetronix in my Z28, everyone said don't let it go below 1/4 tank to keep the pump happy. Does the same apply to the truck? I'm used to taking it down to below empty, perhaps I should avoid that? I modded the bucket to fit the Walbro, so any fuel that gets in the bucket just drains out.

When I had my returnless setup with just a walbro255 I could run it empty and it was fine.
When I switched to a return setup and bigger pumps, they drained the bucket much faster leading to a lean spike, which I think may have started some of my issues that eventually lead to a melted piston. Since you basically eliminated the purpose of the bucket you will want to keep the pump submerged at all times. Unfortunately for us, the pump is in the middle of the tank on the trucks, and without baffles the fuel will go to the back of the tank during hard acceleration.

Yeah, my Walbro has a cool whine to it that is relatively loud under 1/4 tank.
