Default A/C trouble

Not sure if this is the right place to post this thread but here it goes. I have a 89 chevrolet truck with a V-8. Last week I added a can of 134-A to my A/C system to get ready for the summer. My A/C was working prerfect. I put a gauge on the low side and it read about 55 psi. Went to get in my truck today and the A/C will not come on (clutch will not engauge). I jumped the plug over at the dryer and still would not engauge the clutch (has power because sparked). I checked the fuse and it is fine. What is my next diagnostic move. I checked for refigerent and it has plenty of pressure. Gauge will not work when compressor is not engauged. Thanks!

What does it mean that the gauge won't work when the compressor is not running? Is it the low side gauge you mentioned earlier? Does "not work" mean that it reads zero psi? When it read 55 psi, was it at idle or higher rpm?
If it is the low side gauge, it should be high with the compressor off. 55 is high, even at idle. At higher rpm, like 2000, it should go down to about 30 psi.
I don't know if '89s had a high side pressure switch, but I would look for one. It might have opened and stuck from too much freeze gas.
You do make it sound like you added gas for no reason, is that the case?

The gauge was reading 55psi on the low side with the compressor running at engine idle with about 100 degree ambient air (south louisiana). When I checked it with the compressor not engauged at engine idle the gauge maxed out (numbers on gauge do not go that high). Today I am going to see if I am getting power at the compressor with a circuit tester. Any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The problem ended up being the switch the screws in on the side of the drier. I think it is called the low side circulation switch or something like that. I dont know why the compressor would not kick on at first when I jumped over the low side switch. Any way the problem is fixed now.

Yeah, low side pressure. Man, that's weird.
