RIP Engine died on the Capital Beltway
So it finally happened. I really thought it was going to be the tranny first because the engine seemed to run like a beat yard dog. Got on the HOV onramp and not even 50 feet later the engine was barely even idling and reduced engine power came on. I pulled over and scanned for codes and saw about 5 with one of them being throttle correlation. I thought it must be the xlink giving me crap. Reset the codes and tried to start. It sounded like a bag of hammers was dropped down a metal staircase. Recovery vehicle took over 4 hours to get me home due to typical beltway traffic.
Help me out guys: I topped off the battery and started to turn over the motor. Didn't budge an inch. I removed the plugs and starter and tried to turn over the motor and the balancer didn't even move one degree. Engine looks great externally other than a slight pan leak that wasn't there a couple weeks ago. Plugs look great. Coolant is bright orange. Full oil and trans fluid. Its toast since its seized up right?
The motor and trans are original with 204K miles on them. I put the cam heads and intake on at 160K and it never missed a beat since except some flare during upshift which was stopped with a Lucas additive.
I am going to try to endoscope the cylinders or pull the heads tommorow but what do you guys think? Spun a bearing? I saw some yellow bleeding through on my cam bearings at 160K miles but trucked on as most people I talked to said the cam bearings dont see much load anyways.
Who all do you recommend for talking to about getting a short block? Hopefully with cam already installed and degreed so I can just throw my existing heads and intake on and keep moving.

I pulled the heads and they looked brand new.[edit just found bent valve i missed] Drained the oil and it had metal in it but didn't have time to pull the pan today.
Do must of you guys end up rebuilding the same block or do you go with a new one? I was tossing around the idea of a 408 based on a LS2 AL block.

Depends on how much you want to spend.
I have never rebuilt an aluminum LS motor (I know they cant be bored much without sleeves), but the only time I have scrapped a block was when I punched a hole in it.
1 or more rods is welded to your crank, IMO. Might get away with a set of oversized bearings and a crank cut. As well as gaskets, pumps, etc. Its probably not scrap metal at this point.
