Default Hard Steering, please help

2003 GMC Sierra 1500 2wd 5.3 RCSB 180,000 miles

The power steering pump isn't making any odd noises, still can hear the pressure relief valve open when at full lock. Changed PS fluid, was clean, made no difference. No visible leaks.

The steering tension isn't consistent. Doesn't seem very speed dependent, maybe a little easier at speed, not much. After making a turn, turning the wheel in the opposite direction seems very difficult.

How do I diagnose what needs replacement? PS pump, rack & pinion or other part?

Probably a bad steering angle sensor. I forget what the doohickey is actually called, but it controls the boost pressure the power steering pump is allowed to make.

So you think it's the steering wheel position sensor?

I thought I had it all figured out when I found a TSB about changing the steering gearbox for the issues im having...then I realized 2wds don't have a steering gearbox...unless im missing something.

I now see the rack & pinion is weeping slightly, not dripping oil, but just a little wet.

I'm lost.

There will be a solenoid on that box I believe. It watches your VSS and regulates how much assist you receive. I would check the solenoid, you'd need to find a diagram to determine if it's a normally open or normally closed solenoid first, or a stepper motor.

Tire pressures all good in front? Sounds like the rack is going out.

Where is the solenoid? I thought I had a steering gearbox at first, but I don't think the 2wds do? I'm not seeing one on my 03.
