Chips in Keys?

I have the base 02 silverado with no stock anti-theft device, and i was wondering if my key has a chip in it. I went to best buy to get a remote start and alarm system installed and they told me that it would cost me an extra 100 bucks to have the chip in my key deactivated. They said the chip wouldn't allow the vehicle to start unless it was a certain distance from the vehicle. If this is true couldn't i just leave a spare key in the vehicle, that way it would always be close and would then maybe work. I just don't want to have to pay the extra $100. What do you guys think?

I know I've seen some GM keys from the 90's that had that little insulated metel thingy in them but the new ones have got away from that as far as I know. Sounds like to make some extra cash to me.

Now there may be a security related sensor that knows if the key is inserted in the ignition or not. I wouldn't doubt it since the little ding bell under the dash comes on when you open the door with the key in.

Re: Chips in Keys?

I thought there might be a chip in my key ('00 GMC) since it has that big molded plastic piece on the end but, when I got some spare keys made they were just plain old blanks, no plastic...no chip.

Did anyone here about the kid who ate the chip outta the key to his mom's car? They ended up holding the kids stomach up close to the steering column to get the car to start with the chipless key.
