Bad A/C tensioner??

Alright, the other day I was looking under the hood while the truck was running and I noticed a tapping sound, when I looked down I saw that the A/C tensioner was bouncing up and down so hard that it was hitting my tranny cooling lines (the metal one's). I knew this wasn't right so I told my dad to order a new one from the dealer. Well, I went to change it today and I thought it would be worn out but it's still pretty tight. So I put the old one in the vice and used a beam type torq wrench on it, it took 5lb ft to move it, then I did the new one, 5lb ft!! I got the ASP underdrive pulley kit from TBYRNE Motorsports when I won that gift cert, but the belt doesn't seem too loose?? Any Ideas?? I dont want to just change it and it still do the same thing!! THANKS!!

change the belt it is bad and causing the tensioner to bounce. it will eventualy kill the tensioner.

I dont think the belt is bad because it's only a few months old. Could it be the wrong belt maybe?? The napa p/n is 25-040345. Oh, and it does'nt bounce that bad all the time and I dont remember the belt being really hard to put on like everyone said.

Let's say it's the wrong belt, are there marks on the tensioner that should line up or something to tell me if the belt is too long or the belt is streching??

is it doing it with the a/c clutch engaged, disengaged, or both?

bodyguard6799 04-21-2005 01:52 PM

The first time I noticed it, the A/C was'nt, so I tried with it engaged and it still did it. But like I said, it does'nt do it all the time but it does bounce some when its rinning.

Anyone else have any ideas??

replace the belt... if it dont fix it take the belt back and slap that tensioner on there. the prob should be fixed by one or both of those. if not ouch something is wrong with the compressor. keep it simple there are only three parts there and two are eaisly interchangable.

I e-mailed Tybrne and notified them of my dilema, so hopfuly they sent me the wrong belt. I might just change the tensioner too because the bearings are pretty worn. Thanks for the advice!!

With my discount, a new tensioner cost me about $30. I would replace it while you are there.
