Backfired under what operating conditions? Did you run it on the tune before the new gas? What else do we need to know to help you?

I have a generic 91 (cheap handheld) tune in mine. It does that some times when its cold, and I don't shift it smooth (5 spd). Is it a generic or custom tune? Also, isn't this summer fuel in some places?

It's just the blend they use. Gas blends from summer to winter vary depending on region. In texas it's not as huge, now when talking e85 different ball game.

If your able to log it, I would just to see what it's doing. Could be tune or something mechanical.

everything seems to be fine now, had one spark plug that was cracked and a bad plug wire that had rubbed a hole in it, so far so good

Cracked plug was most likely your culprit. Much more reasonable than the "bad gas" theory.
