Now don't you go injecting common sense into the mix. As for the hubs, now-a-days there is no difference between 2wd and 4wd. 2wd bearings ARE splined, meaning they interchange. Timken, who made the bearings for the OEM during the GMT800 platform assembles them in a way that doesn't require a shaft to be going through, the bearing is self contained. The 2wd hubs are different i.e. not splined on our models, but just about every other kind of vehicle does not work like that. To swap to 2wd you need a 2wd trans and driveshaft. Other option is to install a 2wd output shaft and tailshaft to your trans.

you laugh, but last fall, i had a rear u-joint come apart on the road. i pulled over, threw the drive shaft in the bed, dropped it in 4, and babied it home.
