Anyone remove stepside caps?
I'm looking to fix/mod the truck's step side bed. She's an '02 and I'm sure than more than some have seen the caps warp, and it's just not esthetically pleasing.
My goal is to remove the caps and coat with the do-it-yourself X-Liner (?) paint on.
My first question is, when you removed the caps, I've been told there are holes to where the caps snapped in. What did you plug the holes with to create the flat surface?
Second, where the plugs available to purchase? And were you able to put the paint-on liner on top of the plugs and it made a good seal?
Thanks for your time...

There are the holes and there is also the seam where the inner and outer panels meet and are secured together.
It would be a lot of work to smooth all of that.
At some point, GM started running 3M tape all the way down the caps to stop the warping.

So you'd have to peel the sides of the cap up to get the tape to the caps, or are the caps easy to remove where I can do it, and the local Home Depot would have the tape, or is this a body shop job?
My caps aren't that bad, but I'm all for preventative maintenance.

I found a pic in this thread
NBS Stepside bed caps?
My original caps were not taped. I got rear ended and the body shop bought me new caps because mine were all warped. The new ones had the tape all the way down them.
It was the 3M double-sided tape with the red strip covering the adhesive. The same kind they use on window visors and bug shields. It's kind of expensive.
It would be easier to remove the caps so you can clean the surfaces really good. If your caps are already warped, it might be easier to just buy the new ones. Unfortunately they are about 100 bucks each.
