285s are supposed to go on a 8" wide tire minimum according to Toyo.

I have 285s up front on my 2wd 1500 and they are just fine. They do rub a bit at full lock though. With yours being 4x4 i doubt it will rub.

I think all or most of the manufacturers say at least a 7.5 inch rim. Did you raise your front end using the torsion bars at all? Did you get an alignment after adjusting or installing? How are the tires wearing, any problem with uneven wear?

I used to have 285/75-16's on my factory aluminum rims on my 99 1500 Z71 with no problems. I gave the tires to my buddy with an 03 2500 crew cab and he installed them on his factory alum HD wheels and didn't have to adjust anything. They rub the plastic inner fender liner a little on sharp turns, but that's it, and they look great on the factory wheel...no excessive bulge or anything like that

Awesome, thanks!

I'm sure you probably changed tire brands or tire types when you put the 285s on but how did the bigger, wider tire handle compared to stock? Did you have much problem with uneven wear?

It's perfect. I love my Toyo Proxes. The ride is better than the previous Michelin LTX's and I didn't adjust anything. It's perfectly smooth up to 130 mph. But also, my wheels are 18x8"

My cousin put 285/75/16 's on his 02 2500 duramax with the stock 6 " wide rim and with a little raise in the torsion bars they did not scrubb. He went with the Cooper STT's but I dont know if you are looking for a m/t or not.

The tires wore perfectly (I checked the alignment after having the tires installed), and the truck handled great actually. Off the line accel was a little affected since the 285's are just about a 33" tire compared to the 32ish size of the factory 265's, but the bigger tire definitely looked better and filled the wheel wells nicely. (the factory tires were Firestone Wilderness AT's, and I installed BFG AT KO's in their place).

285/75R16's are installed on the stock 16" alloy wheels EVERY DAY at tire shops across the nation. Tire manufacturers make their "recommendations" to cover their butts in regards to sidewall cracking at the beads. The only time I have seen this occur is on heavily modified diesel trucks(excessive torque), and 2 out of the 3 I have seen were on aftermarket 8 inch wide wheels.
