Default 12 second sierra

Hey guys I'm looking to get my extended cab 2wd sierra into the 12's. So far I have a cammed and milled lq4 6.0, with a built 4l65e trans behind it. The rear end this last season was a 3.42 10 bolt that I finally blew up and I am currently building a ford 9" to throw in. I've seen and heard alot of silverados making it into the 12s NA and I'm curious if my problem is just gearing or what (totally not my driving)?

My best time is 13.6 @100mph with a 2.070 60'
My goal is ultimately a 12.5 and I'm curious what I could do next to get there.

What gears should I get for the 9" with a 28" tall slick? I'm not too concerned with streetability since I have a 3400 stall already so I'm thinking a 4.10 should be good.

and other than gears what could I do to launch it better? I cant hit my stall since I just roll through my brakes so I'm going to start looking into upgrading brakes or a transbrake but I feel like that is where I can make up the most time.

Ive also been throwing around the idea of nitrous but its hard to justify $700 for something ill be able to use a couple fridays a year but if I need it to hit 12.5 I'm all for it.

I'm new to drag racing (first season out and im addicted) and I'm open to any ideas on how to improve my times besides my awful driving and yes I would love to do a turbo but I just love the sound of a gnarly cammed v8.. Thank you in advance guys!

well really need to know in detail what you done to your truck? bolt'ons? exhaust?

#1 Divermod! your going to have to learn your truck and be able to drive the hell out of it

#2 the right tires and the right psi for your setup to get you 60ft's down

#3 HP/TQ so what ever else you dont have full exhaust, intake manifold, efans, underdrive pulley, port every thing you can

for what your after 4.10 is probably what you want to go with but it depends on what gear and rpm your crossing the line at with the tire size you plan on using

with all that said every thing has to work together so things like is your stall the right one for your cam? your 2.070 60' was you hooking or spinning? seams low for a 3400 stall "if" you was hooking? if you was spinning was your air pressure in the tires to high? was you on a drag radial? would a 26" tire work better for your setup?

i installed nitrous on my zo6 last year and to be honesty its a PITA! keeping bottles at the right temp, dual bottles to have stable pressure then running out to fill them, heaters, progressive controllers yada yada yada its not as simple as you think (i learned the hard way)

What cam are you running? Who's your tuner? What elevation? Sorry I'm on a phone looking at this and it doesn't she signatures of details.

My 5.3 tr220 -3200 ecsb 2wd with bolt ones and 3:73 - 26" tall tire got me to 13.59@99mph

i believe that 9" will take more power from you

Hey there thank you guys guys for the responses.

the lq4 is a stock bottom end with:
compcams cam p# 54-459-11 231/239 duration and 617/624 lift.
317 heads that are milled .030" and ported
and full bolt ons such as "cold" air intake, electric fan, 1 7/8" lontubes and straight pipes to an axle dump. the trans is a fully built 4l65e with a 3400 stall and shift kit and all that good stuff. i have NOT looked into intake manifolds since everyone and most resources I've seen show only a very small increase of power but now that im maxing out my injectors I'm thinking to use that as an excuse to upgrade it all.

i"m running mickey thompson et street ss tires 305 45 r17 at about 15 psi i believe for my track setup.

I'm crossing the line at the top of second at about 6500 rpm i believe but i might be out a bit on the rpm and the 2.070 was with my hooking as well.

I have a local guy Chris Zelinsky from player 3 performance custom tuning me and the elevation is 2200' and yeah I'm expecting that ford 9" to be thirsty but I couldn't turn down the deal and i want to be confident with my diff setup with room to grow going forward I've blown up too many 10 bolts haha.

also thank you for the heads up on nitrous stroker87, everyone makes nitrous sound so simple and straight forward and i saw the NOS kit made for silverados p# 05135NOS and got excited but thats a little too much with everything else you mentioned haha.

Thank you guys so far with all of the help

When I recently ran my truck on the dyno, the gentalmen that was tuning his trans am after me ran 436 rwp before the 10 bolt let go, then did the 9" and was pissed off that it took him down to 405 rwhp... he mentioned how the pinion being under the ring driving it was the cause. just figured I'd share the info....

Start with the 60', a 3400 stall and a 4L65 should get you into the 1.8's. 4.10's will help, but I would start there. I think you're down on power as well. You will need more than 100mph to run a 12.

Last Call, yeah that 60' with a 3400 stall and him hooking makes me think his tune might be off or to much tire and the truck is falling on its face when he launches?

i dropped 3 or 4 tenths just swapping to a 26" tire from a 28" on my 87 silverado, the 3400 stall i had didnt like to be stalled at the line i got the best 60's stabbing it off idle truck was consistent 1.7's 60ft's when stalled up i'd only get 1.9's

if the truck is dead hooking and falling on its face you should try a little more air pressure or a shorter burnout to get a little spin off the line to help get over the off the line bog (if thats whats going on)

might help if you have a video of your run showing how the trucks taking off

Yeah I am not buying that for one minute, coming from someone who builds specialty 9" rears for a living along with manual gear boxes the 9" is an outstanding bang for the buck= this is inregard to gear ratio options and limited slip-locker options.

back to the Op's issue, get supercharger or turbo and get a custom ground cam from one our vendors.
