I'd probably do LS1 edit($550) with a mild cam package ($350-$450) or with a mild converter ($450+). Or just a nice set of long tube headers.

A cam will really wake that truck engine up. Comp cams 212/218 is a great cam for all around power on the 6L. They can be found used for about $200-$250 with springs. Do the work yourself, and he will still have enough money for a set of headers, or custom tuning. Probably good for 25hp. Add headers for another 20 hp, or tuning for 15 hp and improved driving characteristics.

hey larry how are you today?
i own an 03 1500hd ccsb with a 6.0 . i did a few mods that really made the truck wake up because the thing weighs around 6800lbs.i'm not into going into the motor,i'll leave that to you young guys.what i did was a tbs, drop in kn,gms maf sen.,edlelbrock headers and the ppg111,87 oct.i retained the stock muffler.if your uncle has an ecsb he should do quite well. as they are around 1400 lbs lighter. here are some pics of my trucks.

I'd do tune and headers. Big gains right there yet still nice, docile, and will attain decent fuel economy.
