tsp220/tr220
I was looking at these to cams for a swap... Any clue which would be better, what size of verter, and any other things needed???? Also, plan on doing this as a weekend job.. so any help is appreciated

Personally I would recomend a circle d 3000 stall with some good .600 lift springs, new lifters, pushrods, and all the gaskets of course. Once you've done the swap, have it tuned and enjoy.

I just looked through the classifieds.. i spotted a ls9 cam for sale on there.. the lift is pretty similar to the tr220 cam.. any idea how good that would do or compare to the tr220 in the lil 4.8??

You will need springs LS9 springs would be good, and you will have to buy some parts for the conversion to use the LS9 cam in your current engine. They do have a conversion kit so you can use a ls9 cam in your engine or you can buy all parts separate. Think you'll need new timing cover/cam sensor too. Someone else can chime in here, it sounds like a PITA, but if everything ends up being cheaper than an aftermarket cam then might not be a bad idea. If you find a good used TR220 I think I would go that route, and you can use LS6 / LS9 springs with that cam too to keep the cost down. I would still get a circled 3000-3200 converter though for $375. |
I saw that thread also.. but my 4.8 compares nothing to a 6.2.... Either way, what would be needed, and would like to know a rough estimate in power gains with either cams

How many miles are on your engine? If you have low miles and are gentle with the front crank seal and timing cover gasket all you really need to get are water pump gaskets like stated. Use the Stock Timing chain unless you have a ton of miles on it. If you change out the timing chain then you will get into more work and need new oil pan gasket and new oil pump O-ring as you have to drop the oil pan. You can use Rtv sealant/gasket maker on the timing cover when you put it back on, it won't leak. Ls1howto has a guide that tells how to do the swap if you are doing it on your own. You already have headers, so all you would need is a tune. Maybe later on you can change to bigger injectors if they are needed. You should go ahead and get a bigger tranny cooler as well just to be safe on the 4l60e when you get the converter. Its hard to estimate the power. The same mods on a LM7 5.3L would be approx 325RWhp/325RWtq and this is just a estimate average. Many factors can change this like the type of dyno, temp conditions and weather, altitude etc.. Id say in a stock 4.8L with longtubes and custom tune with mods above ~300rwHP and TQ is going to be less compared to a 5.3L because of it being a 4.8L with smaller cubes. TQ maybe 280-285 to the wheels. |
tr220 in a 4.8 you better go 410s and a 3600 stall
powerband is gonna be high in the rpm range and you gonna need to rev it high |
Id do the tsp220 on a 110 lsa.. The tsp has a tad bit more lift. The 110 lsa will bring the power on a bit quicker and hopefully aide in the lack of torque the 4.8 has... Just my opinion

Im at the 60,000 mark... Yea, i wont need any dod conversion due to it being a 4.8.. 3600 verter?!?! Forgot to mention i wanted a daily driver... But might just look into that high a converter... And will a lower lsa really help out on the lower end??
