TBI to 5.3 Swap???
#3
I've got a 95' GMC 2500 with the NV4500 5 speed standard transmission. I'd like to put a 5.3 in front of the standard trans. but will settle for a 5.7 vortec if I have to.
I have someone that can do all the wiring but he has never done 5.3 & standard trans combo before. I've been trying to research it here and other places but the more I look the more confused I get. I don't think I've found any information on anyone actually doing it yet. I've heard of there being several problems associated with mechanically mating them together but no solutions were mentioned.
If anyone could point me to information where the 5.3 & NV4500 were successfully combined I would really appreciate it.
If not, how about some information on combining the 5.7 vortec with the NV4500. I know the 6.0 was used with a standard but haven't heard any shining reports on the 6.0's fuel mileage. From what I've heard, its generally worse or no better than the 5.7 vortec.
As you can tell I'm pretty adamant about keeping the 5 speed, I love shifting and really miss driving the old truck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is a difference in the bellhousing flange to crank flange distance between the old school small blocks and the LS series. I don't remember the exact differences, but you should be able to find out. I know the auto's use the 99-01 6.0 flexplate and adapter, I'm not sure what would have to be done for the stick version. The wiring shouldn't be that big of a deal, having a standard will make it easier, no trans electronics to worry about.

Thanks for the info Whitecrewcab,
I'll do some more searching on the bell housing to crank distance. Since I'm not getting that many responses here should I post a similar thread over on the LS1 Tech site?
