Stock Replacement Muffler, What Did You Use?
#1
I've been looking to replace the stock muffler on my 2001 5.3L ECSB. When I bought the truck I believe it had a Flowmaster American Thunder. It sounded okay but was too quiet and droned on the freeway. It finally rusted through so I cut off the muffler and remove everything behind it. As of now, everything is stock and I'm running an open I-pipe. Now it's too loud and it sounds like a boat. Except for a K&N filter, the stock is completley stock.
I am considering going with a 3" single in, dual 2.5" or 3" out Magnaflow muffler and dumping it out the side. I know Magnaflow's tend to be very quiet, but I was going to get the shortest one they made, 14" I think it is.
Has anyone done anything like this? I would like to know what other mufflers people are running with their otherwise stock exhaust, sound clips would be great too. I have searched, but there are a lot of conflicting views, which I guess is predictable.
Thanks!

Im running a magnaflow 14'' case single 3'' in and out......welded to my stock exhaust with a 2.5'' tail pipe ran out the back.....its got a nice a tone when you take off....its pretty loud when you romp on it.....quiet at cruise with a nice tone at highway cruise! And no drone! Wish I had some sounds clips........
Its by far my favorite system ive had on any of the vehicles ive owned!

I have the 22" big boy magnaflow. I wish I went with the 18" at least. This one is quiet quiet. I can hear the engine/clutch fan more than the exhaust at WOT.
What I really wish I would have done was just keep the stock muffler and add a DMH cutout. Cost would have been comparable and I could have had loud loud when I wanted it and stock quiet when I needed it.

I went ahead and bought a single 3" in, dual 2.5" out Magnaflow muffler. It has a 14" case length so hopefully it won't be too quiet, or too loud for that matter. I also got some 4" tips and some mandrel bends to dump it out the side neatly. I'll get it installed this week and let you all know how it sounds.

I had the 14" long Magnaflow on my old 1500 dumped with cats, it wasn't too bad. Took the cats off and god it was loud, ran it out the back and it sounded great but was too loud. Took it off and put the 22" muffler on it without cats. It was awesome, put the 14" muffler on my wife's Yukon XL in place of the stocker and in droned like a bitch. I went and had a 22" put in it's place. She loves it, to me too quiet. I wished it was an 18" but with that truck it is easy to get drone in the cabin on the highway. I sold the 14" to a friend, he put it on a 4.8 extracab in place of the stocker and loves it. I guess it is your taste. My HD has a single in dual outlet Magnaflow turned around backwards making it a dual in single out, it sounds good really good, but just a touch loud, not enough to change though.
