Could be either/or...the insulation in the wires may be bad, or a wire got damaged upon removal, or the porcelain on the spark plug may be cracked. I'd go with either factory wires or MSD's, and some NGK's or Delco's that fit your application.

You May Want To Check Your Engine Grounds.... Ive Had An Engine Ground Taht Was So Bad On An Older Small Block... That It Would Arc All The Way Across The Wire To The Coil...

I Told The Guy He Should Probably Clean Up His Engine Each Once In Awhile.... Check Your Connections.... It Sounds Like Its Either Too Big Of A Gap And Its Easier To Arc Across The Cable Than Jump The Gap... Or Theres Insufficient Ground Path From The Spark Plug To Cylinder Head To Ground.

If Its Already Arced Across The Wires They Must Be Replaced Though. Once It Arcs Across The Wires It Burns The Rubber And Creates A Ground Path For Easy Future Arcing

On my 92 Beretta GT 3.1L I ran Taylor 8mm super conductors and bosh platinums and don'r forget the dielectric grease.
