Should I get the 160 t-stat along whith HPP3
 

I am ready to order my HPP3 but I was just wondering if the 160 Tstat worth the extra $50.
Keep in mind I live in Edinburg, TX. I am located down at the southern tip of Texas about 20 miles north from the border. Temperatures here in the summer are 100+ almost on a daily basis. In winter, temperatures hardly ever reach below frezzing and when they do its during the night. If I remember correctly, the last time we had below frezzing temp during the day it was in winter of 95.

Save your money and do the tstat mod- There is a thread on here that explains it in detail. I believe a 3/16 shim is = to 160*. Alot of people on here just put in a bb. I am not sure if that will make the thermostat open at the temps they are looking for. I used the tip of a nail that I cut with some dykes. How is the weather down there. I was born and raised in Harlingen. We had a ranch just North of you in San Manuel, between the San Vicente and the Mcallen ranch. Godd luck.

Man it's not that hot. It's about 92 because it rained last night but its really humid. I found 2 threads in reference to the t-stat mod. One uses shims and the other uses one BB. Does anybody know at what temp does it open if I were to use the BB? Also, by removing or replacing the s-stat, will I loose all my coolant?

yes you will loose most of your coolant but you can drain it thru the petcock on the radiator and save it to reuse, you wont loose enuff to have to buy any especialy where you live, just reuse what you can catch and fill the rest with water.

i am a believer in keeping it cool but once you put in a cooler tstat your fan will efectively become your tstat and it wont start sucking air untill it is nice and warm. i am not sure what the stock temps were but with a 160 tstat my truck ran around 185-190. now with an electric fan and the same tstat my truck runs around 172-176.
