Really Confused About Cams
 
Hey guys and girls, before i get hammered about this i have read numerous cam threads and i am still so so confused about it all. First off i'm pretty sure im going to use the 7.4 comp pushrods (unless there is a cheaper route to go about them) and im also going to use z06 valve springs. Now as for a cam here is what im looking for, any advice is greatly appreciated. I want a really nice lopey idle, i dont want to loose alot if any off the line torque and i dont want to "have" to upgrade to a high stall. I plan on getting a dyno tune along with long tubes and having my stock t/b ported. Mods right now are only dual flowmaster exhaust and a cold air intake. Thanks in advance guys and girls!

Also website links to buy the cam/rods/springs at would be very nice as i cant seem to find shit lol

7.4 might be the wrong size.

So you used a pushrod length checker already and came up with 7.4?

Every engine is different. Just because you read somewhere that Jack Mehoff used 7.4" pushrods in his application doesn't mean thats the size your motor will want. Pushrod length is very important!

It sounds like you don't even have a cam picked out. So there is no way to know that 7.4 is the correct size.

It could be, but 7.375 or 7.425 etc might be. Check to be sure. Especially if you aren't pulling the heads because you can't make it up with gasket thickness.

212/218 with no converter or the 216/220 with a lowered stalled converter

A lopey idle and stock converter don't really go together.

That said, check out this SDPC cam that is 214/218 with 111 LSA. It will have a lot of lope, but will work with stock converter and won't lose torque.

Have not checked the pushrod length yet, i just seen a few people say the 7.4 will be fine, the is my first time ever doing anything like this. I'm really liking the TSP 224/224 with 112 lsa. Hows would the lope be on that cam?

What year and engine is it going in? Goals for the truck? even the 224 in a 6.0L would want at least a 2600RPM torque converter. But the above cams will be a good place to start.

Yea we need to know what your plans are for the truck. Is it a daily driver, weekend warrior, ect? What are the specs of the motor currently and what other mods are you planning on doing? The last thing you want is to put a donkey dick cam in something that will be driven all the time. Believe me, there are plenty of people on here that will tell you to go balls out and have fun, but a bigger cam than needed is going to have many downsides.

Have you thought about sending Pat G a custom build sheet and have him spec a cam for your application. It only costs $25 and it is well worth it imo.
