I am going to be building an LQ9 and I'm thinking I will be able to do for less than $1000 when all is said and done. The most difficult piece to find apparently is the crank, rods, and pistons, and I got lucky and jumped on the ones that grippy posted for sale. Then all you need is a set of 317 heads and a 6.0 block. I have been told that everything else from the 5.3 will swap over. I am at $245 shipped for internals, $375 shipped for heads, no block yet but if I can be patient and find one nearby to go pick up I am thinking $300-400, then some misc gaskets and bearings. Then when the new motor is built I will have a block, heads, and rotating assembly from the 5.3 that I can sell to recoup some of the cost.

So yep, my vote is for the LQ9...with all of the LS1 stuff you already have you should be able to get some $$ for that right?

Thanks for all the responses, didn't expect that many! Please keep 'em coming!

Yeah, I've already got the LS1 shortblock on my back patio (under cover of course). I've been looking a lot at the dyno charts over at LS1tech and keep noticing how soon the torque comes in on the LS1. At 2500rpms, most people with bolt-on's and 224/224-112 cams are making ~350rwtq on stock heads! I know our trucks eat up alot of power, so realistically I might be making around 300rwtq at that rpm. But still that's more I'd be making at 2500rpm than I do right now at 4000rpm!
I guess the reason I posted the poll is for reason I've kinda got it in my head that the LS1 would be more of a top-end gain vs. the 6.0. But, the 6.0 having more grunt. Ya'll understand what I'm saying? Would the 5.7 LS1 make the world of difference under the curve SIMILAR to the 6.0? Or is the 6.0 just so much more of a power house, it puts the LS1 out of the question? I just want to be able to punch it and fly, at any rpm.

If you have the LS1 already then use it not worth going to the extra trouble of getting a 6L.

I say LS1 cause it's the best engine i've ever owned. It'd be easier on gas too if you care about that at all.

OK, now that does make a big difference in choosing. I'm with 1slow01Z71 on this one.

All things being equal, more cubes should be more torque. The LS1 is obviously bigger than your 5.3 - so you should get what you are looking for. You're gonna have more grunt with the LS1 than you do now, but the 6.0 will have more grunt than the LS1.

From an economical standpoint, stick with the LS1, since you are practically there.

What's the difference between the LQ4 and the LQ9? Is the LQ4 the 300 hp version and the LQ9 the 345 hp version? Are there any differences in the blocks themselves?
