Need cam advice
I have a cam now it really sucks. I want a cam that is good for having fun but still can tow as well. I will be towing a RV camper from time to time only from job to job. I have a 6.0 in a 05 1500 ECSB. Also I am going to swap out the 4l60 to a 4l80 as well. In a few months.

That's why it's nice to have a properly filled out signature...takes some guesswork and unnecessary questions out of the mix lol. But yes, madman and vortec's questions are very important. Also, what else is done to the truck? Exhaust? Intake? Tune? Etc....

It's a cam comp pn# 54-600-11. It's just not performing well and barely any HP out of it. I got the standard bolt on ls CAI shorty headers which I am changing to long tubes and exhaust. A guy at work said I should get a 228/230 cam with .589 lift/ 590 or 598 couldn't remember last number for sure.

So, let's talk cams and what duration does to them.
Duration is an amount of time that a valve is held open (in degrees). The larger the duration, the later in the powerband that power comes in. Make sense so far?
With that being said, both cams are not suited best for towing.
Look at swapping in a Vinci HD Tow Stick or Ultra Torque cam. You'll be much more happy with towing.

My cam:
226/232 @ 115 - pulls to the freaking moon hard but is a little soft off idle.
If it were on a 112, sure, the power would come in a bit sooner but it would have more overlap and idle much choppier but it's still going to make it's peak power in a similar rpm range.
Another thing is the tuning. Most tuners, won't tune EOIT. It's simple to run the numbers through a spreadsheet and modify the values. KeninAZ took my suggestion and modified his and he noticed a big difference.
Spark map tuning plays a part to. If your spark map is all jacked up and not tuned, you loose power on the low end have drivability issues, etc.
Think of duration as how long that valve stays open through the intake cycle. If it's a higher number, power will be made later in the rpm band.
If the valves close sooner, you'll make power much sooner.
