LQ9 Blower cam
I want to eventually put a procharger on my SS but before that i wanted to put a cam in. I was wondering what would be a good cam to run with the blower in the 6.0 motor. would the Z06 cam be a good blower cam? And if i didnt go with the blower, what would you guys reccomend i run. I am planning on running a 3000 stall as well. Thanks

Re: LQ9 Blower cam
Z06 cam is for a light car and top end power. So no to that in a truck.
A 214/220 114lsa is nice. Depending on how radical you combo is, and boost levels you may want a something larger. I plan to run a 216/224 114lsa with my heads/cam swap this summer. That will be a great FI cam in the future and will be nice for some cubes when the time comes. I am unsure of lift as I dunno if I will go with the big ratio rocker (I probably will). Lift will depend on your use of rockers. If you go with the factory 1.7 get a higher cam lift. If you use the 1.8(5) ones get a bit less cam lift as you may have piston to valve problems. |
Re: LQ9 Blower cam
I use a Comp 212/218@114 in mine and it seems to do alright. I will use a 02 Z06 cam in my new motor.
I thought about the lack of grunt at low rpm but, I think I might up the boost and short shift it. Stay at 9lbs. but have boost build quicker and shift at 5800 or something. Just to see what happens. A stall also helps. |
Re: LQ9 Blower cam
I'm on a roll posting about the 2002 ls-6 cam.
the specs are 204/218 int/exh .551/.541 LSA 117.5 this cam was used in the silverado SS regular cab shown at SEMA NOV. 02. ls-6 intake,ls-6 cam, stock LQ9(ls-6 springs and retainers) no exhaust mods or headers. if you look at the specs the are much shorter than most of the aftermarket cams 204/218 good idle and great mid range torque. |
Re: LQ9 Blower cam
First, you'd need a stall converter for an ATI and/or a big cam. Does that truck have a 4L60E or a 4L80E behind it?
Why not add an ASP pulley? $200 for ~10-14rwhp isn't that bad. Don't forget the air intake and a ported TB. And some longtube headers also. Why not go to a set of ported and polished 5.3 heads with bigger valves to pump up your compression to about 10.5:1-11.0:1? Then get a nice grunt cam. You need intake duration for more low and mid power. Those cams I listed are great. If you go much over those durations, you will be shifting around 6400rpms...a bit high for a heavy truck IMO. 5.3 heads, long tubes, good cam, and a 100 shot and you will be like after slapping around a Harley-Davidson or Lightning... I don't see why you wouldn't get close to gaining around 75-100rwhp like that w/o the spray. Easily a low, low 13 sec truck. |
Re: LQ9 Blower cam
Thanks for the info.
The more i think about it, the more i want to just do a good head and cam job with a nice big lopey cam, and then like a 125 or 150 shot or something like that. I think that might be better with 10:1 compression? what you guys think? |
Re: LQ9 Blower cam
I already have a UPD intake and LS1 fans and im already planning on a 3000 stall, and some ASM headers. The truck has a 4L65-E trans in it.
Does anyone know how much my compression would raise with the 5.3 heads? And are there any disadvantages to using these heads? I thought the 6.0 ones flow better, or is that just because they have the bigger chamber or something? I doubt ill do pullies because im still not sure about the procharger idea, and i dont want to slow down my alternator because of my stereo. Im also thinking about doing an electric water pump too. Dont they make them for the LS1s now? |
Re: LQ9 Blower cam
the 5.3 heads will boost your compression to the 10.5-10.8 range the 6.0 heads have 72cc chambers and the 5.3L have 61 cc. but you'll have to change valves in the 5.3 heads 1.89 intake vs. 2.0 in the 5.7/6.0 heads. the 6.0L heads match the LS-6 heads in flow up the .400 lift height. ls-6 heads have 64 cc chambers.
