Justin from Blackbear is down in the Chula Vista area, he does amazing work. Are you planning on smogging the truck?

You can go bigger then that, I've got the comp 212/218 low lift in mine and it passes smog no problem

As the OP stated a 212/218 would be just fine, even on a 112 lobe separation it'd have an overlap of -9, plenty of cushion to pass emissions out there. With a good tune a -6 overlap cam can even get by the sniffer, but I wouldn't push your luck too much out there in Cali.

Stock converter with a smaller cam like that would be fine, it wouldn't be a dog too bad out of the hole as long as whoever does the tune does a good job with it.

You would not have much of a problem drivability wise without a tune for a few days.

California doesn't do the sniffer test on 01 and newer vehicles anymore as of January 1st 2012? Or maybe it was 2013, as long as you get it tuned before smogging it so its not throwing any codes you should be fine. And with the 212/218 you won't "need" a converter, but I would absolutely recommend it, I've got a 2800 stall circle d in mine and it pulls my heavy 4x4 like a freight train from 2500 rpm up

Richard, how was your torque out of the hole with that cam and no converter?
I wont be putting a converter in until the trans goes and I don't want it to be a dog off the line
