Default I was given a car with an L6 today, questions on improving performance

Well, the story is that I was given a car with a 230 L6/3 speed today and it runs, but it certainly isn't fast. What do you all think is the most economic amd good way of upgrading this drivetrain?

I'm toying with the idea of an LQ4/4L60E, but it seems that it would be cost prohibitive when all was said and done. Anyone have any ideas?

A cheaper route would be a 5.3. They are in less demand and sell for considerably less. It would still haul *** in a car.

I am assuming this would be an older car. I would get a Gen I 350 chevy and stick it in there. Much cheaper than any newer type engine.
