I just spray some solvent (air-cleaner detergent) on it and hose it off (inside spraying outward) and let it air dry before oiling. Oil in thin even coat, dry 20 minutes and coat again if necessary. Towel soak excess if any.

Never thought of that. What do you do, knock most the dirt off and through it in there? Any special soap? Normal cycle with heated drying too?

I've always used Tide or Cheer laundry detergent. Works great and doesn't seem to affect the gauze.

I've always used the proper oil to re-oil them...

hose it out

My father told me that he has used WD-40 in lieu of the K&N oil...
