Heads/cam 5.3. How bad will my gas mileage be?
I'm looking to buy a 5.3, 2 wheel drive, extended cab, and was looking to do some mods right away. I was thinking either a z06 or custom cam and some nice CNC'd heads. Maybe some cheap longtubes and a different intake manifold or something as well. I was wondering though, with these mods and a tune, am I going to get 8 MPG? Can anyone with similar mods comment on their experience with gas mileage? I am looking to daily drive the truck so fuel economy is important to me. I am willing to make a small sacrafice for the added power, but not a huge one.
I was also thinking of doing 4.10's and firming up the shifts through the tune. Is this tranny going to be able to handle the added power and firmer shifts? |
Search button works wonders....
To answer all your questions- H/C 5.3 MPG's will depend on your driving. I got 22.5 mpg's on the highway and about 15ish in the city. Thats driving like a peepaw I had a big cam and well worked heads on my 5.3L 4.10's won't help with mpg's. And your stock trans is on borrowed time once you start modding the engine. |

The search button does work great, but its sometimes difficult to bring an 8 month old thread back to life if I have further questions. Plus now that I've found you I can ask very specific questions in hopes of getting an answer. Either way this new thread may benefit others in the future, it won't be a complete waste of your time :) So about the MPG's. In your opinion would running maybe stock heads with just a z06 cam with full intake and exhaust, tuned, get me closer to 18 around town? I'm trying to find a happy medium of gas mileage and power. Maybe just an intake manifold, ported throttle body, and long tubes or something. Also what I don't understand is how these trucks are rated at 6000 pound or whatever towing capacities, but people say once you start Modding and adding power the tranny will be on borrowed time. How is adding a little bit of power any different than adding a lot of load? |
Depends on your converter choice. 4.10's actually helped my gas mileage around town. With my mods in sig I get 12.3 mpg all city driving

mostly depense on how good ur tune is....n how heavy ur foot is also, but personaly i wouldnt put an zo6 in there go bigger like 220 or 224

My buddy just did a cam only in his ctsV and his MPG literally went to 8mpg around town. He is tuned as well. This is exactly what im afraid of and I dont want to put myself in ths situation. |
if you want power it is gonna sip gas.......your cam and converter choice will probably affect it the most.

What if I got a 6.0 block and put 5.3 heads on it to raise the compression? |
What if the world was flat and we all fell off?!
There is no way in hell you will get 20mpg's in the city with a V8 truck, end of story. If your looking strictly for city mpg's your best bet would be gears and a tune. |
