Which Head Bolts?

Is there a way to tell if you have the new, all the same length head bolts, or the old two lengths, before removing the heads? The truck was manufactured in 08/2004 so I think I shou assume it is the newer style, I just don't want to get too far into the job and then have to wait for bolts to be ordered.

Thank you,

Rich

With that manufacture date they "should" definitely be the newer style, same length bolts.

Thank you, that is how I was reading it.

My engine was out of an 04 and I had the older style bolts. If the engine is out id pull the bolts just to make sure.

What year is the truck? If it's o5 you should have the short even bolts. You can either pull one bolt on the bottom row, or take your vin to the stealership and they should be able to tell you. If the bolt on the bottom row is short you have the new style.

I am sorry I forgot to post the truck year, it is a 2004 Avalanche with a manufacture date of 08/2004.

I called the dealer and they said they sometimes have to pull the parts before they will know. That is not good when trying to get all the parts here and set for the swap.

I know I need new gaskets and head bolts, are there any other parts that should be done at the same time? Truck has 120K miles on it.

I am planning new plugs and wires as well.

Thank you

If your in a hurry you can always buy the 2 sets of headbolts at an auto parts store, then return the ones u dont need.

Order one set of each, or pull one bolt from the bottom row like the other guy said.
