PLEASE get some jack stand if you are going under the truck, a guy was just crushed around my way from being under a car with out jack stands, the jack gave out.

depends on how much the shaft rotates while its disconnected...just would be a good idea to mark it...

I prefer to keep the steering shaft connected just so I don't have any potential problems

Make sure you get some jackstands too GMCtrk, don't crawl under there with just the hydraulic jack supporting the truck. God forbid the truck slips or the jack bleeds down. You really need to be getting under the truck to do headers anyway, I don't see how you'd be able to unbolt and slide the factory y-pipe out otherwise.

Oh yea, I didn't have to touch my steering shaft when I did my StainlessWorks LT's, but I did have to unbolt it to install the Gibson shorties that I had prior.

I slide under the truck just fine as it is. I got under there and it wouldn't be a problem for me to get the Y pipe out without the truck jacked up. I changed out the starter with the truck on the ground.
