I have a 2000 5.3 silverado, and all of a sudden the fuel gauge drops to empty and i get the low fuel light to go on. then the gauge goes back to normal and the light goes off. it has been doing that for 4 months has anyone had this problem or what could it be?

 

Mine does it every once and a while. At first I though it had something to do with my Caddy guages but I have seen other with the same problem. Next time it does it, just shift down to neutral them back to drive and it will fix itself. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

 

It is a bad sending unit or something like that. I had that happen to my 99, and if it were not for warranty, I would have been out $850. Hopefully you have your warranty still, because it is expensive if you don't.

mine does the same thing, whenever i fill up, it drops to empty. if i give the truck a good shake, it will trip back over to full. i dont have my warenty any more, so there is no way i will take it in. i asked the dealership and they said it was probly the flote in the fuel tank, that was what i thought to. it doesnt hurt anything, just a little anoying.

yeah that fuel gauge (as well as most of the other gauges in the cluster) are haunted by gremlins or something. here's another trick you can try: put yur truck in neutral and rev it pretty hard. you don't have to hit the limiter or anything but get it abouve 4500. no matter what level of gas you got the gauge will drop to near empty and then go back up when the RPMs come down.

why do these things happen? the world may never know.

 

I also have problems with my fuel gauge. But you wont find one person with a chevy that hasn't had a problem with that damn fuel gauge. Sorry I cant be of some help, maybe you have a short in the wiring for that gauge, I dont know. Good luck!
