driveshaft clunk again.
 
i've post this before and i know some others have. i went to my dealer today to see if they would replace the slip yoke with the nickel plated one like the TSB said to do. my truck is over warranty so they wouldn't do it. so i went to the part dept and a guy there typed in the TSB # and the part # for the nickel plated slip yoke came up. just out of curiousity i asked him how much it was and it listed for $222. so i went home and typed in the part# at gmpartsdirect.com and the list price was exactly the same, but they sell it for $126. anyone know if getting this part will definitely solve my problem with the driveshaft feeling like it has slack everytime i stop then accelerate? it make the clunk sound too. is there any cheaper priced aftermarket slip yokes that i could get that would solve the problem? if not, i guess it is better than paying $222.

This will solve your bump/clunk problem. Also change your
transfer case fluid and put in some new Autotrac II fluid.

Make sure you get a shipping quote first from gmpartsdirect. They will rape you on the shipping most times.

What is the TSB #? I have the same thing on my '01. I took it to the dealership earlier this week with a list of things for them to fix under warranty and they said they could not duplicate the problem I was experiencing, that's plain :bs:. I'd like to have the TSB # and then if it applies to the problem I'm having with my truck I'll get it fixed the next time around (my 3yr/36K doesn't expire until Summer '04). I'd like to get it done as soon as possible though.

I paid $206 total for the following. The price is the shop cost that the shop doing the work was charged.

Slip Yoke
Tail Shaft Bearing
Transmition Service Kit

All the parts are from the dealer and I doubt that the normal cost through a decent shop would be much over if not the same as I paid.

was the bearing and service kit required to change to the nickel plated slip yoke? or can i get away with just the slip yoke?

I don't believe it is mandatory. I'm sure many have done it without the bearing. It was just a suggestion from the shop owner where I bought the parts. The tail shaft of the trans unbolts and makes for a fairly easy job. However, the labor will go up do to having to take it apart and sercive the trans.

If you just buy the yoke all you need to do is press it on the driveshaft and your ready to go.

It will be another week or two before I get the time to have everything installed on my truck, but I can let you know how it went if your still wondering by then.
